Cappadocia Balloon Festival: Dates, Locations and How to Plan Your Visit
The Cappadocia Balloon Festival is Turkey's biggest hot air balloon festival: a free, multi-day event every summer in which dozens of special-shaped balloons from around the world fly at sunrise over Göreme, alongside the 100 to 150 passenger balloons that already fill the sky each morning. The 2026 edition, the seventh, ran from 30 July to 2 August. This guide covers the dates, the location, how to watch, and how to plan a trip around it, including how to book your own balloon ride for festival week.
What is the Cappadocia Balloon Festival?
The festival is organised by Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism as part of its Cultural Road Festivals programme, with the Nevşehir governorate. Unlike the standard teardrop-shaped passenger balloons that fly in Cappadocia every day, the festival brings in special-shaped balloons: hearts, owls, parrots, rockets, globes and other designs flown by teams from Türkiye, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil, Slovakia, Austria and Poland. In 2026, 30 special shapes took part.
The special shapes are display balloons. They fly demonstration flights at sunrise and do not carry paying passengers. Commercial passenger flights continue as normal throughout the festival, which makes festival week the only time of year you can fly next to a giant owl.
Festival dates
| Year | Dates | Location |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 (7th edition) | 30 July to 2 August | Göreme, Nevşehir |
| 2027 | Not yet announced; late July to early August expected based on previous years | Göreme, Nevşehir |
Dates are usually confirmed by the Ministry in June. We update this page as soon as the official programme is published.
Separately, the Ürgüp municipality runs its own balloon festival in early August, about 10 minutes' drive from Göreme. The two events are organised independently and can fall in the same week, so a trip in the first week of August gives you a good chance of catching both.
Where it takes place
The festival is centred on Göreme, in the heart of Göreme National Park. The special shapes launch from the same fields the passenger balloons use, on the plains between Göreme and Çavuşin and around Kızılçukur (Red Valley), and drift over the fairy chimneys with the morning fleet. In the evenings the festival area usually hosts a balloon glow, where tethered balloons are lit from inside by their burners after dark, plus concerts and food stalls. The evening programme changes from year to year.
How to watch
Watching is free and needs no ticket. The only requirement is to be at a good viewpoint before sunrise, which in late July and early August means about 05:30 for take-off and 05:00 to be in position.
Best viewpoints:
- Love Valley viewpoint (Göreme to Uçhisar road): the classic frame of balloons above the fairy chimneys. Parking fills early.
- Göreme Panorama (Esentepe): a wide terrace above the town with easy parking and fewer people.
- Around Uçhisar Castle: the highest point in the area, with views across the whole valley.
- Kızılçukur and Aktepe: closest to the launch fields, so you can watch the inflation and lift-off up close.
- Hotel rooftop terraces in Göreme: the most comfortable option. Many cave hotels have terraces that look straight at the launch fields.
Can you take a balloon ride during the festival?
Yes, and it is worth doing. The 27 licensed operators flying from Göreme run their normal sunrise flights every festival morning, weather permitting. From the basket you see the special shapes at eye level, with the fairy chimneys below.
Two things to know:
- Book early. Festival week is one of the busiest weeks of the Cappadocia year. Passenger flights sell out weeks ahead, so book your Göreme balloon flight as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Expect summer pricing. In July and August, standard shared flights in Göreme are typically listed at around €100 to €160 per person, with hotel pickup, a light breakfast, about 60 minutes in the air, insurance, the post-flight toast and a flight certificate included. Pick your date to see live rates from every operator.
Planning your trip
Getting there. Fly to Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (40 km, about 45 minutes to Göreme) or Kayseri Erkilet Airport (75 km, about 1 hour 15 minutes). Both have frequent flights from Istanbul of about 1 hour 20 minutes. See our guide to planning a Cappadocia balloon trip from Istanbul.
Where to stay. Göreme puts you within walking distance of the viewpoints and the evening programme. Uçhisar and Ürgüp are 10 to 15 minutes away by car. Hotels fill up one to two months before the festival.
How long to stay. At least three nights. That gives you one morning to watch from the ground, one morning to fly, and one spare morning in case the weather grounds the balloons.
Weather. Festival balloons follow the same rules as passenger balloons: the civil aviation authority (SHGM) cancels all flights if the morning wind is too strong. Summer is Cappadocia's most reliable season. In 2025, 83 percent of scheduled flight days in August went ahead in Göreme. Because the festival runs over several mornings, a cancelled day is usually followed by a flying day.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Cappadocia Balloon Festival free?
Yes. Watching the flights and the evening programme is free. You only pay if you book a passenger balloon flight.
Can I ride in a special-shaped balloon?
No. The special shapes are display balloons and do not carry passengers. To fly during the festival, book a normal sunrise flight with a licensed Göreme operator.
What time do the festival flights start?
At sunrise, around 05:30 in late July and early August, and they last about an hour. Evening balloon glows and concerts start after dark.
Are there other hot air balloon festivals in Turkey?
Cappadocia hosts the main one. The Ürgüp municipality also runs a smaller festival in early August. Pamukkale has regular passenger flights but no established festival.
When will the 2027 dates be announced?
Usually in June. Previous editions have fallen in late July or early August, so plan for that window and check back here for the confirmed dates.
To reserve your own flight for festival week, choose your date on the Göreme, Cappadocia flight zone page and compare live prices from all 27 licensed operators.
